About Microformats Workshop
Microformats are HTML-based design patterns that add semantics to common web content, such as that about people, places, events and links. More than semantic meaning, though, microformats have a wide range of benefits, including SEO, standards compliance and extensible data publishing. Some of the biggest sites on the Web today use microformats: Google, Yahoo!, Twitter and Facebook, to name a few. And you can too!
In this three-hour workshop, you will learn the basics of microformats:
- The history microformats; what they are and what they aren't
- The foundations of microformats, including POSH
- How to identify web content suited for microformats
Then, learn why you should be using microformats:
- User experience enhancements
- More meaningful search
- Standards
- Tools available that leverage microformats
Last, get your hands dirty with exercises to help you publish microformats
right away:
- Elemental microformats, including XFN
- Compound microformats, including hCard, hCalendar
- Authoring tools
- Validation tools

accessibility.
